Quick Tip
In case of evacuation, leave your doors and windows unlocked so firefighters can get in if needed.
We collaborate with the Kentucky Division of Forestry to improve public safety and knowledge of wildland fires. The Kentucky Division of Forestry leads the state’s response in fighting wildfires. Learn about wildland fire suppression efforts.
Be Wildfire-Ready
Effective Wildfire Preparation
In states like Kentucky, where we can go long periods without rain, wildfires pose a significant threat. You can help mitigate the risks of wildfires by taking the time to properly prepare.
Stay Alert to Wildfire Risks
Did you know that 99% of Kentucky’s wildfires are caused by humans? Most of these are accidental—an unmonitored debris burn, a campfire gone rogue, even a single spark from a piece of equipment can be enough to start a fire.
Wildfires can spread rapidly, fueled by dry conditions, high winds, and abundant flammable materials such as dry leaves and grass. It is essential to stay informed about local weather conditions and heed warnings from authorities.
Create a Defensible Space
One of the most effective ways to protect your home from wildfires is to create a defensible space by clearing out flammable materials within 30 feet of your home and keeping a green, well-watered lawn. Build with fire-resistant materials to protect your roof, siding and decks, and install screens over vents and eaves to keep embers out. Regular home maintenance like cleaning gutters, roofs and under decks are also good fire prevention practices.
Emergency Planning and Kits
Having a clear and established emergency plan is critical. Determine multiple evacuation routes from your home and designate a set meeting place for family members. Hold family drills to make sure everyone knows the plan and how to respond in case of an evacuation.
Part of this plan should include preparing an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights and batteries. Keep this go-bag in an easily accessible location so you or a family member can grab it quickly during an evacuation.
Staying Informed
Staying informed during a wildfire is vital. Sign up for local emergency alerts and download apps that provide real-time updates. Regularly check the Kentucky Division of Forestry’s website for local advisories.
Community Involvement
Working together as a community can be a game changer when it comes to wildfire preparedness. Join a local emergency planning group and participate in community fire drills. Programs like Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) offer basic disaster response skills training, which can be invaluable during a wildfire.
Be Prepared, Stay Safe
Wildfires can strike suddenly, and preparedness is not optional. Here are some tips you can implement during wildfire season to keep yourself safe:
- Prepare your vehicle: Keep your gas tank at least half way full and park facing your escape route for a quick evacuation.
- Drive safely: If you’re driving through smoke, turn on your headlights and drive slowly.
- Protect your body: Wear an N-95 mask to prevent smoke inhalation, and wear protective clothing made of natural fibers to protect yourself from the heat.
- Secure your home: Close all windows and doors, turn off gas and oil supplies and fill pools, hot tubs and garbage cans with water.
- Plan early and act immediately: Practice with your evacuation plan with your family, follow evacuation orders as soon as you get them and don’t come back until it’s safe.
Being proactive and staying informed about the risks and mitigation tactics for wildfires will help you protect your home and your loved ones in the event of a wildfire. Be prepared and stay safe.
