The 10 Essentials
Maps
Topographical maps are strongly recommended. Besides aiding the navigation process, topographical maps will help you get the lay of the land and become aware of any mountains or bodies of water. We recommend a 1/24,000 scale map.
Compass
Include a good-quality compass in your Search and Rescue Ready Pack. Brush up on how to use it so you're ready once you're in the field.
Flashlight
Keep a back up flashlight in your bag, along with extra bulbs — we recommend LED — and batteries. Head lamps are also good, especially if your hands aren't free.
Food and Water
Pack non-perishable food that requires little to no preparation. Uncontaminated water can be hard to come by, so keeping a stash of bottled water and water decontamination treatments in your ready bag is a must.
Clothing
Bring clothes that are good for layering — you never know what the weather might turn in to. Rain protection is always a good thing to keep on hand, along with a hat and pair of gloves. And, if you have the room, a space blanket just in case you're out overnight.
Fire Starter
Your fire starters must be waterproof. It is a good idea to have three options, like a lighter, waterproof matches and magnesium and flint. Practice with these materials so that when the time comes, you're ready.
Candles or Fuel Tablets
These materials can work in many ways, acting as hand warmers, heating hot drinks or even serving as additional fire starting tools.
Knife
Classics for a reason, a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman is always an excellent choice for a multipurpose knife. If those aren't your style, you can always opt for a larger camping knife, which can come in handy to help gather firewood.
Signaling Device
At a minimum, carry a whistle. Smoke signals and flares are also good choices, but can be fire hazards, so be aware of the fire dangers in your area.
First Aid Kit
You should always carry a first aid kit with latex gloves and a CPR shield in your Search and Rescue bag. Aside from a first aid kit, make sure you're capable of administering basic first aid and CPR in case you come across an injured person.
