Course Description

This course will provide to first responders the information they need to take appropriate initial actions when hazardous materials spills or releases are encountered. Its scope is limited to giving detailed information about the initial defensive operations. The course addresses the first responder’s responsibilities to recognize the presence of hazardous materials, secure the area, provide personnel protection, and request the assistance of trained technicians. Additionally, it addresses the control of hazardous materials releases from a safe distance using defensive operations.

 

Student Criteria:

This course is open to all Emergency Management, Rescue, Environmental Response, Public Health, Fire, Emergency Medical, and Law Enforcement personnel or any organization having responsibility for responding to a hazardous materials incident. Prerequisites Required – (Hazmat Awareness)

 

**Copies of these course completion certificates must be provided before class to the POC listed below. **

 

Special Notes:

Advance student registration is REQUIRED and must be received by May 5, 2026, to participate in this course. MAXIMUM number of students seats is 30. Meals Lodging, and travel arrangements/expenses are the responsibility of the student and will not be reimbursed by KYEM unless otherwise noted.
